... the wisdom of Lockwood Dody By Homer Myers
Note : Lockwood Dody is a ground hog who lives in a kudzu bank on the side of a country road in the vicinity of Talmo , GA . Local resident , Homer , allegedly has regular conversations with him , but , instead of doing weather forecasting as his more famous cousins do each spring , he comments on the economy and , like most economists , smokes a pipe .
Having been recovering from knee replacement surgery , I had not seen or talked to him in several weeks . Since it was a warm February day , I decided to take a walk with my new knee and hoped to find him at his relocated den on the edge of the orchard . Sure enough , there he sat , lounging in the honey suckle at the mouth of his abode and smoking his pipe .
He spoke first .
LD : “ Hello , Myers . How ’ s the knee ?” HM : “ How did you know about my knee surgery ?” LD : “ Saw it on Facebook . Your wife asked for prayer , not for you , but for herself as she nursed and waited on her wimpy and whining husband .” ( I had always wondered where he got the computer , but now I was even more perplexed as to how he got on Facebook .)
HM : Attempting to defend myself , I replied , “ Well actually LD , this thing has gone well , better than I expected , and I don ’ t recall whining all that much .”
LD : “ What about your pharmacist not re-filling your pain medication prescription for a third time even though you begged and wept and made a public scene in the drug store ?”
HM : Changing the subject , I jumped to the question that I had been looking forward to asking him . “ What do you think about the DOW ’ s historic climb over 20,000 ?”
LD : “ The bigger question for those who observe and comment on your economy might be what is being done about debt -- government , business , and personal ? But since you bring up the Market , does it make you feel more secure to see it reach record highs ?” HM : “ Well ,” I stammered , “ It kind of does . At least it ’ s better than going the other direction , ain ’ t it ?” LD : “ If you really think that , take a look at Proverbs 23:3 .”
Before I could ask what the verse said , he dumped out his pipe , ambled back into his den and waved goodby .
