Gaunt and pale, she began telling the agonizing story already apparent by the dark circles around her eyes and the tears that bubbled forth. Hers was a story of being overdosed on meth and brain dead. “All life support removed, if I didn’t wake up in 30 minutes, I was on the way to the funeral home. The ink on the signature lines dry, absolving all other parties of any liabilities for my death or burial! “ She was young, pretty, full of life—yet brain dead -and the mercy of God brought her back! This young person was the second one in a week. A young lad committed suicide and God took him home. The young girl had been in our discipleship meetings in the jail in the past. This was her second time around. The young lad had been in one of our training courses and upon completion wrote the following: ”my vision is to know God”! When the news comes of such destruction, the heart is crushed beyond reason; yet there is a purpose in the crushing. Only those that touch the agony of others can know the compassion that God Himself poured out on the Cross. The story of the Good Samaritan on the road to Jericho reveals a basic truth to this compassion. We must not cross the road as the priest and Levite did, or fail to go to the other side of town, or touch the lives of those who have been attacked and left to die in the Look to the Hills p.28 Hope, the Thing with Feathers p.19 S How many people young and old alike are ensnared by their desperate need to fill the void in their hearts. The pain in their lives or loss in their families caused them to be lured by Satan himself. He lures with the opium of prescribed or illegal drugs. Shaped for Significance p.27 Sharing Stories By Diane M. Hale (706)692-5971 ditches of life. For years man has tried all the solutions that the world has to offer only to find they are not working. Wonderful services to provide clothing and feeding the poor are seen everywhere, but one thing is still lacking -- the power and compassion of the risen Christ. Our world needs disciples filled with the power of Christ, disciples willing to risk the rejection, ridicule and mocking of a “sophisticated” church and society. We must become people that know the compassion of the “suffering church” of other lands, and that are willing to be a “fool for Christ.” Teen suicide is a major cause of death among teens, though many do not recognize suicide as a serious threat to a teenager’s well being. Here in Pickens County I know about two in the space of two weeks. We are a major part of the following statistics published: http://www.teendepression.org/related/ teen-suicide-statistics/ In a survey of high school students, the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center (NYVPRC) found that almost 1 in 5 teens had thought about suicide, about 1 in 6 teens had made plans for suicide, and more than 1 in 12 teens had attempted suicide in the last year. As many as 8 out of 10 teens who commit suicide try to ask for help in some way before committing suicide, such as by seeing a doctor shortly before the suicide attempt. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among adolescents and teenagers. According to the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH), about 8 out of every 100,000 teenagers committed suicide in 2000. For every teen suicide death, experts estimate there are 10 other teen suicide attempts. http://www.teendepression.org/related/teen-suicide-statistics/ 4 5
