Being Different to Make a Difference By Joe Hale Developing Horizons Ministries Developing Horizons: The Journey Throughout history being different has advanced mankind and civilization. Our nation was founded on principles and government that was different resulting in the greatest nation on earth. Eli Whitney, Henry Ford, Marie Curie, the founding fathers and others have brought about systems and techniques that have advanced processes that resulted in the things we take for granted. A few examples are mass production, improved quality, medical miracle drugs, and the jet airliner which, by the way, was perfected as recently as the 1960’s. Our goal with this magazine is to try to take a more proactive approach to the drug problems this area and the nation face. We shall endeavor to focus on all aspects of the problem, from the personal destruction of individuals and families to the cost of law enforcement, rehabilitation, and, yes, confinement. We hope this magazine will help bring the problem to a higher level of attention, resulting in greater awareness and hopefully more participation in solving it. We are trying a different approach by making communities aware of the existence of resources and people who have committed to work at all levels to deal with this enormous problem. To be candid, we’re going to be in your face and hopefully in your heart to make all of us more conscious of this devastating problem. Do we have all the answers, absolutely not, sometimes we don’t even have all the questions, but, with your help, we shall try to make a difference. We will also focus on the spiritual aspects of the problem, hopefully showing the people struggling with drug addiction that there are two forces at work: the evil in the world and the belief that we are not ever alone but Christ through the Holy Spirit is the greatest resource available. We espouse no particular denominational belief, but openly profess our faith as Christians and, in doing so, we shall endeavor to help those suffering with the destructive effects of drug addiction. We are a 501 (c) (3) charity consisting of volunteers of the citizens of North Georgia. We have one paid employee (part-time). All monies go directly to support the work to which we have committed. We solicit your support through donations, grants or advertisement. We ask you to help make a difference in our community and nation. The journey began in the heart of God and the childlike faith of Diane Hale. Her experiences as a child in the Church of England and her personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ laid the foundation for continued spiritual growth. A major factor in her relationships with other faiths was her move to the United States with her husband, Joe, whom she met while he was serving in the United States Air Force and stationed in England. As a wife and the young mother of Gary and Kathleen, Diane served as a teacher in the local Baptist Church where she grew in Christ and learned to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit. The call to full-time evangelistic ministry for Diane came in 1978 while serving as Staff Education Coordinator at Kennestone Regional Hospital in Marietta, Georgia. With two years of Bible School and two years of Ministry Development Training, Diane became an ordained minister. Mission trips and years of worldwide evangelism proved the need for mobilizing the Body of Christ and equipping the saints. It was the revelation of the need for making disciples that fanned the flame of a life of study, writing, and working with the poor, teaching, speaking and intercession. Equipping, empowering and encouraging the disciples of Jesus Christ became her life’s work. Many have found their purpose and calling in God, orphanages and training centered have been established, churches have known much growth and hundreds have become active followers of Christ. Diane is the author of eight books and of Morning Light a daily devotion that travels via e-mail to many nations. As President and Directors of Developing Horizons Ministries (DHM), this call is still the focus for Joe and Diane and those involved in the activities of DHM. Their children, now adults, have also answered the call, Daniel and Kathleen are missionaries in Austria, Gary and Lucinda are fulfilling the vision of Harvest Hills Christian Retreat Center at Carter’s Lake, Georgia. Today, DHM is based in Jasper, Georgia, but continues to maintain a worldwide outreach through short term ministry trips. Of primary current focus is ministry to young men and women who are struggling with addictions and to inmates in the local jail. DHM team members are involved in leading Biblically-based support groups which help individuals in their struggles with life controlling issues. Seminars, conferences and speaking engagements for members of the DHM team are held wherever they are requested in the U. S. and U.K. and regularly at the Jasper office.
