occur , which lets students learn from failing . Coady adds , “ Students are allowed to make a mistake and see the result of that mistake . When they get to the clinical floor they will have seen what happens when they make a specific decision and they will know whether or not to follow that same path . AI and simulation afford us the ability to let students take these risks and learn from them .”
Incorporating critical thinking into onboarding programs
“ Most orientation programs focus on knowledge or theoretical components , but they don ’ t really exercise the next step , which is experiential knowledge ,” says Coady . In many orientation programs , new nurses will sit in a classroom either completing online learning or listening to an instructor , sometimes participating in a skills lab , and are typically observed by a preceptor for an average of 6-12 weeks . However , Coady explains that while a preceptor can ensure a new nurse is doing everything within policy and procedure , they ’ re not usually trained in how to evaluate and develop one ’ s critical thinking ability .
“ Our critical thinking assessments will utilize AI case studies and students must identify the problem , provide objective assessment , document that assessment , and provide recommendations .”
