You can clearly see their faces in other videos posted by their related channels( and more recently, some especially awkward but funny Crunchyroll promos), but never in a Let’ s Play of a video game. They seem to treat it more like a podcast, and duly so since often times the commentary on the show drifts from covering the actual game to talking about pop culture, personal stories and anecdotes.
Cryaotic on the other hand, as a single Let’ s Player, is known particularly for his voice. Though he may not have the largest range, his voice is soothing and pleasant to listen to. He also has a ridiculously contagious laugh that fans love so much they’ ve made compilations of his laughter. The main representation of Cry is a small androgynous cartoon person, named“ Sup Guy”.
While in some ways Let’ s Players hide aspects of themselves from their audiences, they also share parts of themselves. Some Let’ s Players use the format as a way to talk about what they like to do outside of playing games and about their life circumstances. It’ s unclear if this is causation or correlation at play, but Let’ s Players who tend to talk more about their lives also have a partnership with YouTube. Since making videos is their job, they face a pressure to make more content and try multiple game genres to appeal to a wider audience, get more views, etc. Some of these Let’ s Players can and often do make other videos, like compilations, vlogs, skits, music videos, reviews, animations... just about anything.
And Let’ s Plays aren’ t even only of video games. GameGrumps has a Let’ s Play series called“ Table Flip” where they play tabletop games together.
Let’ s Plays are a large and still growing part of the YouTube content community.
