Many people think that upon arriving on Devils Lake , ND , a guaranteed bucket of 14-inch jumbo perch will be awaiting them . Don ’ t get me wrong , Devils Lake is an amazing fishery , but it ’ s all about the flurries and being there when it happens . Location , learning how to get there , how long to stay , and where to go next are pivotal to success . Devils Lake has a flurry going on every day , so let ’ s go find it . So how can you put the odds in your favor ? How do you know when to play more aggressively and when to be more conservative and slow things down ? Bites can change by the hour , especially when you are chasing jumbo perch . When is it time to move ? Understanding when you are in a flurry and when it is done can be tricky .
Will the fish come back or are they gone for good ? These are all factors that really can make your trip one of smiles and laughter or one of boredom and dissatisfaction . Of course there is no one trick that will work all the time , rather , it is more important to put the puzzle together by unlocking the pieces .
What ’ s a Flurry ? I am constantly looking for the next flurry . I would define a flurry as a period of time when fish are active in the location you are fishing . You put a lure below your hole and fish respond to it . They are in a neutral to positive mood . This is also when you are going to catch the majority of your fish . Summer Fishing / Ice Fishing / Hunting / Lodging long end . The reality of most bites is that they are short-lived . It ’ s important to not fish the same spots over and over again , rather , look for similar structures on different areas of the lake .
What ’ s a Flurry Look Like ? An example of a consistent flurry you will experience on Devils Lake , is the walleye flurry in the morning and late afternoon hours . You can catch them during the day , however , it is not as common . Perch will often smack during the early morning and late afternoon window as well , but they seem to bite even better during midday . So when chasing perch understand that each hole that is drilled could truly be that golden one where they are caught one after another . The midday hours are often when some of the most consistent jumbo perch flurries occur .
When to Stay ... So you have caught a few fish , maybe not great , but you are getting some action , marking some fish , and getting a few to bite . In the back of your mind you are pondering what to do . Should you move or not ? I would say that this would be a prime example of when to make a smaller move . Look at your lake map or GPS , study the area you ’ re fishing , and to the best of your ability , drill as much of it as you possibly can . Any humps , saddles , holes , flats , etc . that are close by should be fished . Especially since you are catching some fish already in the area .
