“The Deck Bar & Grill is a vital part of our resort
in the summer,” says Shari Prause, director
of marketing at Arrowwood Resort on Lake
Darling in Alexandria. “It is open from Memorial
Day to Labor Day weather depending.”
One tradition of the Deck Bar opened in
1995 is to have music every Wednesday and
Thursday night and on some weekends.
When carpenter Ernie Ritari and his family
moved to Squaw Point in 1917, it was a half
day’s ride by horseback from Brainerd. Today, it
is a lot easier to get to Ernie’s on Gull dockside
restaurant by boat.

Ernie, an immigrant from Finland in the 1800’s,
started a camping and fishing resort where his
wife Edna tended bar and cleaned cabins.
The Ritari’s were famous for their community
pig roasts and later built two guest cabins.
They did not allow vodka on the resort due to
Ernie’s bitterness against the Russians. That is
ironic considering the signature drink today is
the vodka based Greenie.
The venue now features 22 tap lines
showcasing local breweries as well as the
nation’s best and unique breweries. Cocktails
and tap beers change as the seasons do, so
there is always something new to try.
Ernie’s on Gull Lake is operated by brothers
Chris and Mike Foy, who graduated from
Brainerd High School and spent their
childhoods around East Gull Lake. The marina
can accommodate boats of any size, including
jet skis, pontoons and cabin cruisers.
