Destination Ozarks | 13 efforts. The committee partnered with Retail Strategies, Inc., to create a comprehensive five-year strategic plan aimed at enhancing the longterm vitality of downtown Harrison.
Several key recommendations from that plan have already been achieved thanks to coordinated efforts between the Downtown Strategies Committee, Mayor Jackson, and the Harrison City Council. These include:
1. Establishing a Historic Commission to help preserve and protect the architectural integrity of downtown. 2. Adopting the International Existing Building Code, which promotes safe and efficient rehabilitation of older structures.
3. Securing designation from Main Street Arkansas to launch Main Street Harrison— a transformative step for the city’ s future.
MAIN STREET HARRISON: LAUNCHING IN 2026
Main Street Harrison officially begins operations on January 2, 2026, and will spearhead many of the initiatives outlined in the strategic plan. During its inaugural year, the organization’ s focus will center on building façade improvements, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the district while preserving its historic charm. Fundraising and organizational efforts are currently underway, laying the groundwork for an exciting new chapter in downtown development.
THE LIVING CHRISTMAS TREE: A BEACON OF GROWTH
At the northwest corner of the historic Harrison Square, a new symbol of community pride has taken root, literally. A living Christmas tree, planted this year and purchased with funds from the HHBA, now stands as a growing centerpiece for the downtown area. Each holiday season, the tree will be adorned with lights, bringing warmth and cheer to the square while reminding residents of the enduring spirit of the community. Unlike a traditional cut tree, this living evergreen will continue to grow year after year, becoming a lasting landmark that reflects the ongoing revitalization of downtown Harrison.
As it grows taller and stronger, so too will the collective effort to preserve and enhance the heart of the city. The living tree is more than a seasonal decoration, it’ s a living promise of renewal, unity, and the bright future ahead for Downtown Harrison.
