Taking a break from golf , we visited the North of the Island to meet with Yemaya Adventures for some Kayaking . In amongst the mangroves , with crystal clear water beneath the boat as you gently paddle along enjoying the warm sunshine on your back , with the only sound being the paddle breaking the water . A quick stop at Ile d ’ Ambre to stretch your legs and have a quick drink as you Robinson Crusoe you way around this tiny island which was used as hunting land for deer .
Back on the main island visit Cap Malheureux famed for its distinctive red roof church . The red roof contrasts so sharply with the blue sea , white sand and green grass . Then wander further up the coast to Rivière du Rempart to watch the skilled kite surfers fly . They twist and turn as they enjoy themselves whilst entertaining you . With another Peter Matkovich golf course , Mont Choisy nearby , the North is a great option for all .

Push the boat out and enjoy lunch at Chateau de Labourdonnaise , before returning to explore Grand Baie , an area for tourists , without being too touristy ! Various beachside side shops , and also Grand Baie bazaar to wander around .
The newest golf course ( at the moment ) is an IMG designed 9-hole course called Azuri the Nine . Purposely built to form part of a larger offering to include shops and schools as part of its community living plans . This 9-hole course can be played as an 18 hole , with two sets of tees . A bright new clubhouse and attached pro-shop were fresh and nicely decorated . It had only been open a few months when we visited , but the opening holes , with the river on the left , were as good as a more established course . Other holes just need some time to bed in . All had big greens and it was easy to navigate . The lucky investors and visitors will get to dine in the on-site restaurant which overlooks the course , and they will be in for a treat with the high-quality food on offer . Diners also get to watch the 9th / 18th tee as golfers take on the fountained water expanse in search of the green .
Tamarina on the west side of the island is another 18-hole course . Tamarina feels like a member ’ s club . The well stocked pro-shop and the adjoining bar were empty , save the odd golfer enjoying a post round drink . Weirdly , despite its lack of bodies , it had an atmosphere that felt strangely familiar - like that of an old colonial members ’ club , squashy , comfortable and welcoming . The course is dominated by the Rempart Mountain , known locally as King Kong Mountain due to its shape .
Designed by Rodney Wright in 2006 , Tamarina swerves around the low-level houses . More akin to a golf course in the US , with the houses appearing to take prime space as the course meandered around . This did lead to some big walks green to tees , but in truth , as the house were low level and the lush planting is plentiful and established , the houses were not that obvious . It also helped that the cart path was well maintained .
