Tucked below the equator in the azure Indian Ocean lies the 2,000km2 island of Mauritius . Despite its strong Indian influence , Mauritius is actually part of Africa , sitting close to Madagascar on the Southwest of the continent of Africa .
A tropical island which rarely gets cold , it can experience cyclones and heavy rains during their summer and wet season which is November to April . We visited January to March and whilst there were cyclones and heavy rains , it wasn ’ t cold . In fact , the rain was welcome in the damp humidity of the wet season as it rarely dipped below 28 degrees .
Mauritius is a relatively small

With a good easy to navigate road network , exploring was fun and with it being a former British colony , driving on the left hand side of the road and sharing similar road signs was an easy transition aided by the common driving experience .
More so in the wet season , mosquitoes can be problematic , and mainly limited to the higher more dense locations .
During our 10 weeks there , we never felt uncomfortable , pressured or in a situation where we felt vulnerable . Crime is low , but inevitably there are always chancers , so vigilance is always prudent , especially around busy markets and tourist attractions .
With ten golf courses , spread all round the island having a base on the West side meant very few were out of our 1-hour travel time window .
Each course had its own character and in some cases quirks too .
Stay in Bel Ombre on the South side of the island for a few days , is the five star Heritage Resort .
A five-star resort with two hotels of only 150 rooms to appeal to families or the couples wanting an ‘ away from the children ’ break .
