• The Isle of Islay is renowned for its smoky , single-malt whiskies and with seven distilleries , there ’ s ample opportunity to sample some . Founded in 1779 , the Bowmore Distillery is a ‘ must see ’ for its lovely setting on the shores of Loch Indaal . Take a tour to gain a better understanding of the malting process and how whisky is made .
• The Nevis Range situated in the midst of some of the world ’ s most ancient and beautiful landscapes is one of the Highland ’ s premier visitor attractions . Take a trip on Britain ’ s only mountain gondola , travelling effortlessly to 650m on Aonach Mor and enjoy spectacular views over the West Highlands . Nevis Range is also Britain ’ s highest ski area and a winter wonderland for skiers , boarders , climbers , bikers and sightseers alike .
• Enjoy award-winning fish and chips or fresh scallops from the Fish & Chip Van on Fishermen ’ s Pier in the colorful and picturesque port of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull .
• Take a scenic drive through Glencoe . The best approach is from the south on the A82 , one of the major routes through the Highlands . The road climbs over the bleak expanse of Rannoch Moor and drops down between the steep scree-strewn sides of Glencoe . Awesome mountains such as Buachaille Etive Mor and the Three Sisters loom on either side , with riverine scenery at the bottom of the glen .
• Head for the Outer Hebrides and the unspoilt islands of Harris , Lewis and North & South Uist to enjoy some of the best beaches in Scotland .
• Take a cruise on the Caledonian Canal , connecting Corpach near Fort William with Clachnaharry in Inverness , which was completed in 1822 . It is over 60 miles long , but more than two thirds of its length consists of three connected lochs - Loch Ness , Loch Oich and Loch Lochy . The canal , built principally by Thomas Telford , comprises 29 locks in total . The waterway can be regarded as one of Scotland ’ s greatest engineering feats and remains a popular route with leisure craft of all kinds .
