The use of Platinum Paspalum grass across greens, tees and fairways ensures year-round playability, a crucial factor in Thailand’ s tropical climate. Combined with a carefully engineered drainage system, the course maintains excellent conditioning even during the monsoon season, something that sets it apart from many regional layouts.
A JOURNEY THROUGH LANDSCAPE One of Aquella’ s defining characteristics is the sense of journey it offers. This is not a course where holes simply follow one another, it unfolds. Transitions between holes are thoughtfully designed, with buggy paths bringing players on an exciting journey before revealing new vistas at each tee.. It’ s a subtle but effective design feature, heightening anticipation and adding a sense of theatre to the round.
A MODERN CHAMPIONSHIP LAYOUT At its core, Aquella is a par-72 championship course stretching just over 7,000 yards from the back tees, designed by the highly regarded Pacific Coast Design team. Their brief was clear: create a course that appeals to all levels of golfer while still offering enough strategic depth to challenge elite players. The result is a layout that appears generous at first glance but reveals increasing complexity the more you play it.
Fairways are wide and inviting, yet subtly contoured, encouraging players to think carefully about positioning rather than simply reaching for the driver. Strategic bunkering, often edged with distinctive railway sleeper faces, frames landing areas and adds a visual sharpness to the course. Meanwhile, meandering waterways and lakes come into play throughout the round, not only as hazards but as aesthetic features that enhance the rhythm and flow of the course.
The front nine gently introduces the player to the course’ s style, open, flowing and strategic, before the back nine increases both the visual drama and the challenge. Water becomes more prominent, and the routing begins to flirt more closely with the coastline. The ever-changing light ov er the Andaman Sea adds another dimension, with morning rounds offering soft, golden hues and afternoon play delivering sharper contrasts and deeper shadows.
SIGNATURE MOMENTS Every great course has its standout moments, and Aquella is no exception. The par-3 11th is widely regarded as the signature hole, a visually arresting tee shot played towards the shimmering blues of the Andaman Sea, with Thai Muang Beach stretching out beyond. It’ s the kind of hole that lingers in the memory long after the round is complete, combining challenge with pure aesthetic appeal.
Elsewhere, the interplay between land and water continues to shape key moments. Several holes feature tidal water features, meaning the visual and strategic character can subtly change depending on the time of day. This dynamic element adds an extra layer of intrigue, ensuring that no two rounds feel exactly the same.
