DESTINATION GOLF GLOBAL GUIDE AUTUMN 2026

There are golf resorts, and then there are destinations where setting, history and golf come together to create something genuinely memorable. Destination Golf was fortunate enough to recently experience JA Mar Hall Golf & Spa Resort firsthand – and it quickly became clear why it belongs firmly in the latter category.

Set within 240 acres of glorious parkland on the banks of the River Clyde, just ten minutes from Glasgow International Airport, this five-star Scottish retreat offers an impressive blend of heritage, championship golf, contemporary luxury and Highland hospitality. Following an extensive £ 20 million transformation, Mar Hall reopened in 2025 with a fresh interpretation of its historic character. The result is a resort that retains the grandeur of its remarkable past while introducing a more contemporary, colourful and experience-led approach to luxury.
Over its long history, the property has served several purposes, including as a private residence and, during the First World War era, a hospital associated with the treatment of servicemen. Its transformation into a five-star hotel retained many of the building’ s original architectural features, allowing today’ s guests to experience the atmosphere of an authentic Scottish estate rather than a purpose-built resort.
The story of Mar Hall begins long before it became a luxury golf resort. The magnificent mansion dates from the 19th century and was designed by celebrated architect Sir Robert Smirke, whose work also includes the British Museum. The Category A-listed building possesses the scale and architectural drama of a Scottish country estate, with Gothic detailing, soaring interiors and mature woodland surrounding it.
The recent renovation has deliberately embraced that heritage rather than hiding it. Grand historic spaces now sit alongside striking contemporary interiors, Scottish artwork, luxurious furnishings and intimate spaces designed for relaxing after a day outdoors.
Mar Hall’ s location is one of its greatest assets. Positioned in Bishopton, Renfrewshire, on the south bank of the Clyde, the resort enjoys sweeping views towards the dramatic Kilpatrick Hills and sits beneath the spectacular Erskine Bridge.
For international golfers, accessibility is exceptional: Glasgow International Airport is approximately ten minutes away, while Glasgow city centre and Loch Lomond are both within easy reach.
