Murcar Links is an enigmatic and tumbling adventure on this stretch of gorse-drenched dunes. Fairways are tight and the hummock-like terrain leads you on a merry dance as you find yourself bouncing along fairways, almost inevitably parallel to the North Sea. It won’ t always be kind, even to your best shots, but at least such terrain promises high tees, sweet shapes and naturally sited greens. Those greens are beauties, too, with the elevated pulpit putting surface on the par-5 4th a thrilling highlight.
Originally designed by Archie Simpson and revised by James Braid, it may not be overly long( 6,500 yards, par 71) but it demands a head for strategy with an abundance of fun fizzing alongside. The course continues to move with the times, and it just gets better and better.
