This is picture-perfect links golf and it was designed with aspirations to be the‘ world’ s greatest golf course’. Martin Hawtree, the designer, had the budget and space to do as he wished and he has created something that would make an artist blush. The views from tees are just mouth-watering with holes moving in a north-south orientation, alongside the North Sea. Holes flow in almost complete isolation between the biggest dunes on the Menie Estate. It gives them an almost ethereal quality and you are unlikely to see another group of golfers on the course, thanks to that space and routing. It feels like it’ s just you against the dunes and the wind. Fairways are wide and mostly smooth, but the bunkering is omnipresent and penal and once you’ ve seen them you can’ t unsee them! The 18th hole has 18 bunkers so if you think you can avoid sand for the entire round, think again. And it’ s 650 yards from the back tee! If ever there was a reason to choose you tee wisely, this is it. Fortunately, you have six to choose from.
