PERTHSHIRE & HEARTLANDS
The Golf House Club , Elie
A crafty , cunning and quirky links , Elie has been entertaining golfers since the late 1500s . Old Tom Morris extended the course to 18 holes in 1895 , while Head Greenkeeper at nearby St Andrews , before Elie ’ s most famous son , James Braid , made further changes .
This is the sort of links that plays with the golfer ’ s ambition : it is not long but it requires the utmost respect . There are blind shots , perfectly positioned and treacherous bunkers , and large greens with surfaces like glass . The element of ‘ different ’ ensures this links is crammed with the unexpected and that just makes it all the more enjoyable . There are stunning views , too , both from high up and down next to the Firth of Forth , where the coastal holes ( 10 to 13 ) amplify the wild ocean breezes and fill your senses with ozone .
There are 16 par fours and two par threes but you won ’ t have time to notice ... you ’ ll be far too focused on Elie ’ s thrills . Visitors will also be entertained by the famous periscope in the starter ’ s hut – how ’ s that for quirky – and the clubhouse recently received a £ 1.25m refurbishment .
