Southerness
For a par of 69 , with five par threes and two par fives , this might ‘ read ’ like a short course but it is a links with teeth . At 6,566 yard course , from the white tees , this links will test the best . The middle tees are more manageable at 6,110 yards . This links dates back to the 1940s and it is set out on low , level terrain that suggests subtlety and strategy … but with its ever present gorse and / or heather , it also has some savagery to it . Both snatch your ball and release it most unwillingly . You ’ ll encounter the traditional links challenges of wind , swales , humps and hollows , as well as pot bunkers , and it all combines to create a highly rated course that lies a little off the beaten track . But it ’ s well worth the journey . Views are endless – the mountains in the Lake District are clearly visible as is the Isle of Man – and you get very cosy with the Solway Firth on several holes , starting on the 8th . Here the dunes ensure the most traditional of links-like traits , and the par four 12th , also beside the water , is the signature hole . Greens are small and beautifully defended . www . southernessgolfclub . com
