Panmure
Panmure sits between Carnoustie and
Monifieth, creating an impressive string of
links courses on this stretch of coastline. Golf
started here 1899, and it is famous for hosting
Ben Hogan, who practiced here before his
1953 Open Championship victory. It is said
he even mowed the 17th green to get the speed to his liking.
Set slightly inland, with trees scattered around the course it
offers something quite different to its neighbours. A par of 70,
measuring 6,550 yards from the back tees, it plays straight out
and back, with the wind typically in your face to start. Three
of the par threes, however, are set at 90 degree angles so the
cross-winds will tease you mercilessly. This is a fun course that
starts very gently for two holes… then steps up a few gears
with undulating fairways, low dunes, semi-blind shots, slippery
greens and sweet variety. Hogan’s favourite was the 6th: he even
recommended the addition of a pot bunker on the front right of
the elevated green. You may not thank him for that!
