Penina
Only a short drive from Portimão is the stunning Penina Golf Resort. Set within a vast 360-acre estate, Penina offers golfers an all-encompassing golf break. The resort features two main courses: the revered 18-hole, par-73 Championship Course and the 9-hole Resort Course.
The Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course has hosted the Portuguese Open a record 10 times and is a must-play on any visit to the Western Algarve. The lush landscape presents narrow corridors between trees, frequent water hazards, and smaller greens, where commitment and accuracy are essential for approach shots. The closing stretch is particularly famous, highlighted by the par-3 13th and the par-5 18th with its elevated, tiered green.
There is also a third course on-site, the 9-hole Academy Course which offers an ideal introduction for those new to the game or looking to refine their skills.
Penina Golf holds a special place in Algarve golfing history, as it is considered the birthplace of modern golf in the region. Opened in 1966, the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course was the first full 18-hole course built in the Algarve, helping transform the area into one of Europe’ s leading golf destinations.
DID YOU KNOW?
!
The course was actually built on former rice paddies, and the designer, three-time Open Champion Sir Henry Cotton, used the old drainage ditches as hazards, turning farmland into a championship layout.
