Daytona Beach has other reminders of its Art
Deco heydays. We dine another night at the 31
Club, a wonderfully-flamboyant throwback to the
glamorous 1930s.
My favourite, though, is the historic, lime green
Streamline Hotel, which recently reopened as a
boutique hotel after extensive restoration to take
it back to how it was when it opened in 1940. The
entrance, stairway and lobby bar are every inch Art
Deco chic. But it is the rooftop Sky Lounge, which
has an indoor bar and outdoor terrace giving views
over downtown and the beach, that’s the real gem.
A huge black and white photograph adorning the
wall by the lifts shows a group of men sat round
a long table in a rooftop room at the hotel. This
was no ordinary meeting, though, as it was at that
meeting that an agreement was signed to form
what is now NASCAR.
In short, it is the birthplace of motor racing in the
US – the holy grail for race fans.
If you love racing cars and golf, Daytona Beach is
heaven sent.
