DESTINATIONGOLF. TRAVEL MUNSTER

Limerick

A smart, neatly packaged parkland that asks you to tighten your belt, breathe in and navigate your way between avenues of attractive if unforgiving flanks of trees. The trees – deciduous and conifer – add colour and density, and make clear that this is not a course you can overpower. That way disaster lies. Guile and intelligence are your friends here. So many holes curve and tease you off the tee, asking for shots that seek out position if you are to access the smallish greens hiding beyond the elbow. It is a masterclass in patience.
Limerick is one of Ireland’ s oldest courses, dating back to 1891, and included amongst the course’ s designers is the name of Dr. Alister McKenzie. It gives this mature parkland added fizz, something enhanced by the engaging stretch from 14 to 16, which includes two short par threes and the enticingly short but well-bunkered 287-yard par four 15th.
FAVOURITE HOLE
The par five 8th is straight and true, tripping over a pretty stream that messes with your head as it influences all of your shots to reach the green.
WHAT’ S IN THE BAG?
This is a day when your driver should spend most of the time in your bag: six par fours are under 360 yards.
