DESTINATION GOLF 2026
Castlemartyr
When Castlemartyr first opened( 2007) it embraced golf of the low, flowing and rhythmic kind – almost links-like – with a spaciousness and style that gives you the opportunity to swing freely and hard, as you target generous fairways and silken greens. Draw or fade, you can open the shoulders here. A word of warning, however, as the bumps and ridges bordering fairways are home to deep rough and are not to be trifled with. A small creek also runs across several holes and must be avoided, especially on holes 2, 4, 7, 8 and 9. It adds extra punch. The short par four 9th makes that abundantly clear. It is on the front nine where you can and should make a score, because the back nine ramps up the length and challenge. It includes the enigmatic par five 11th which seems to dogleg forever.
The boundary of the course is wrapped on three sides in deep woodland, and holes are smartly routed around the resort’ s magnificent five-star hotel, which includes the luxurious Manor House. It dates back to the 17th century and, today, is home to the Terre, a two Michelin Star restaurant.
Investment in the course continues: greenside bunkers have recently been upgraded, with the new style favouring a pot-hole design; swathes of gorse have been removed to open up the course; and enhancements to fairway drainage are underway.
