Could there be a more explosive course on the planet? Dunes rise over 150 feet above sea level with deep troughs ploughing in between, like a ship fighting a storm. The terrain here has never heard of the word‘ level’. It is hard to imagine any golf club offering the scale of adventure you’ ll experience at Carne, as the dunes dictate everything. Holes follow the natural contours so every ounce of the land’ s raw power is maintained.
It is breath-taking stuff, and while you might imagine this is a difficult course to play, it’ s not. Oh, sure, you’ ll be tested time and again, and you may only be a moment from misfortune, but Carne embraces epic fun … as should you.
Carne’ s 27 holes balance precariously on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, and Blacksod Bay, at the farthest reaches of Co. Mayo. The original 18, designed by the legendary Eddie Hackett, opened for play in 1995. The new nine, designed by Ally Melntosh, opened in 2013. The main course, named the Wild Atlantic Dunes, combines the old with the new, and you will need a head for heights.
Please don’ t ignore Hackett’ s original front nine. These holes are often described as being gentle – which would be like describing the Grand Canyon as small!
