Favourite Hole: The short par four 13th is a gentle
dogleg to the right. From the high tee you can let
your ambitions get the better of you
What’s in the Bag? An understanding of playing golf
shots off sloping lies and how uphill and downhill
targets will affect your distances.
Delgany
There are some steep courses in Ireland, and Delgany sits at the
high table when it comes to cavorting hillside golf. High tees, high
greens, woodland and trees make this a fun, fun parkland. It is old
too, so the trees are big and colourful, and these give the holes
their individuality. Surprisingly, there’s plenty of room to play so
by all means go wild with your driver – it is too tempting not to
– but staying on the many sloping fairways and finding your way
around the gentle doglegs should be your number one concern.
The 12th is probably the course’s best known hole (Index 1) but
the par threes are particularly strong with the steep descent
to the 16th green promising the tee shot of the day. The club is
renowned for its four Ryder Cup heroes (one of only two clubs
in the world to boast such a feat) and a visit to the bar where the
trophies and history are displayed is a must. A new short game
area has improved the club’s facilities.
