Travel News Madeira Tees up golfing boost (Portugal) Madeira has experienced a boost in golf numbers during the first four months of 2019, with the two ‘mainland’ courses experiencing almost double-digit growth. Palheiro Golf has enjoyed 9.4 per cent growth on the same period last year, while Santo da Serra is not far behind with an increase of 8.4 per cent. Tourism officials believe the archipelago’s mild climate - which makes Madeira an ideal all-year-round destination - and short-haul journey time from Europe is attracting golfers who might previously have travelled further afield for their golf. New Signature Hole for Bruntsfield Links, Scotland A MAJOR makeover at one of Scotland’s oldest golf clubs is celebrating a milestone in the two-year project. The first phase in a £1 million project at Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society will be unveiled to members and guests in June. The Edinburgh based club, which traces its roots back to 1761 and has been a regional qualifying course for The Open, commissioned top golf course architects Mackenzie and Ebert to redesign several holes and refresh the bunkering around the course. Despite a harsh winter, the new-look 11th, 16th and 17th holes are ready for play. This 54- hole scratch event for senior male amateurs will be played over Legends’ Ussher’s Creek course designed by celebrated Canadian architect Thomas McBroom. In addition to the individual stroke play tournament, competitors from the United States and Canada will have the opportunity to represent their countries and contribute to the Friendship Cup team competition.
