blankets, hoods or some other item of clothing
draped over their heads to ward off the chill.
Perhaps my best flight ‘ever’ from Johannesburg
to London was with Air Mauritius.
To be fair this was a combination of both the
carrier and the destination, but Air Mauritius
has also been one of the most consistent
airlines I have ever flown on and having been
to Mauritius 15 times, I think that I have had
enough experience to support the comment.
In this case it was a one way trip and included
the quite dreadful and onerous pre-booking
caveat that ‘forced’ to break the flight with
a stopover of at least three nights duration
in Mauritius! I clearly must have misread the
T&C’, because rather like a rat up the proverbial

drainpipe, I immediately made a reservation at a
resort for 3-weeks. I can just imagine the report
card: ‘little Johnny tries very hard in class, but
needs to pay much more attention to the small
print!’
Nevertheless some ‘mistakes’ are just meant to
be made and a splendid time we had of it, at
one of the region’s many beautiful destinations.
Still the old rule, whatever the class, airline or
route you might choose, is ‘caveat emptor’.
Although these days, through the influence of
social media, the customer has found his or
her voice, so ‘cave venditor’ might also be true
as well! Whoever you are and wherever you
have been, it is odds on that you will have your
own personal travel war stories and the scars to
