Ethiopian Airline, an enjoyable experience. in the panning of this most recent trip, to investigate if the option of taking one of the Cunard liner’s World Cruise legs from Cape Town to Southampton would work for our northward migration. Comfortable though the Union Castle ships were, this would certainly have been a step up in class. Sadly the dates simply would not fit with my schedule….ah well, next time perhaps! In part 1 of this feature, published earlier in the year in DGT, we looked at the attractions of a southwards migration to warmer climes with the onset of a northern hemisphere winter. I must confess that in researching this piece, my own compass was pointed north on the first leg of the trip so as to coincide with the onset of the winter in southern Africa. The journey to our final destination, in Brittany France, had to be made via London due to business commitments and on this route we are quite spoiled for choice, with a number of airlines offering direct flights to London. These include South African Airways, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways, whose service now also includes a direct flight ex UK to King Shaka Airport near Durban in Kwa-Zulu Natal. A number of Middle Eastern airlines fly via their hubs to service the routes into the UK and Europe, as do most of the major European airlines including Air France, Lufthansa and Alitalia. Having previously flown on 36 airlines, of varying shapes, sizes and origin over the years, I decided, for this trip, to try another of Africa’s carriers in the shape of Ethiopian Airlines. A number of criteria were used to determine this option as the final choice; luggage allowance which was either 64 or 72 Kg per passenger, depending on the number of pieces of luggage - we had need of a ‘hefty’ amount Volume 4 • Issue 46 29
