DESTINATION GOLF ASIA 2023

The magic of golf vacations in

SE Asia

by Mark Siegel
Who better to explain the appeal of booking a golf vacation in this region than American-born Mark Siegel , who travels the world promoting golf in SE Asia .
He should know as he is also the CEO of Asia ’ s leading golf tour operator called Golfasian , com which organizes golf all across Indochina .
Pre covid they handled around 22,000 golfers per year and won the “ 2020 Best Golf Tour Operator in The World ” award . In 2022 they also won “ Asia ’ s Best Golf Tour Operator ” at the World Golf Awards .
Business is improving again now that people are starting to travel again and his company ran a huge seven-day amateur golf tournament in May 2022 with over 300 golfers from all over the world participating .
Thailand , not surprisingly , is the biggest draw for them but they also have offices in Vietnam too . Thailand is home to the highest concentration of international-standard golf courses in the region . “ Thailand ’ s got more than 270 courses , and around 60 of them are as good as any you ’ ll find in the US , Australia , or anywhere else ,” Siegel said .
“ But places like Cambodia and Vietnam are becoming more and more popular as legends like Nicklaus , Norman , and Faldo have designed courses there .”
HERE ARE A FEW OF SIEGEL ’ S TIPS Golf in Indochina can be a bit different from what you ’ re used to , and certain aspects of etiquette must be strictly adhered to .
You must remember that you ’ re in a country that has different cultures and customs . As a visitor , one should adapt and enjoy ‘ la difference .’
1 . The style in Thailand , Vietnam , and other SE Asian regions is certainly more relaxed when organising things , and although this can lead to some frustration , it is very impolite to show this . A simple smile and show of courtesy go a very long way — in the lobby , in a restaurant , or on the golf course .
2 . When playing golf in Indochina , remember you are a visitor and respect the locals who are also playing . Golf is still quite a new sport out here and they are not quite so familiar with the etiquette that we ’ ve been taught in the west .
3 . Caddies are a unique golfing feature in the region . They are predominantly female ; they perform a great task in very tiring conditions . Always be polite and courteous to your caddy , and you are sure to get great service . Although the language can be a problem , you ’ ll be amazed how universal the language of golf can be . Tips are greatly appreciated , and I recommend around US $ 10 , or more , if you are pleased with the service .
4 . Bring or leave your golf clubs ? If your trip is mainly for golf , you will be happier using your own , full set of 14 clubs . On
