THINGS TO DO
IN
1 Watch a sega show: Nothing to do with electronic games consoles, the
only game boys here are the swivel-hipped hunks who perform the folk
dance of Mauritius with swirling girls in colourful skirts, often around a
beach bonfire.
2 Port Louis: Founded by the French in 1735, Port Louis is the bustling
and charming capital of Mauritius. Among historic sites are the recently-
renovated Government House and La Place D’Armes square that connects
it to the seafront, and UNESCO-listed Aapravasi Ghat, where immigrant
labourers from India first landed.

3 Black River Gorges National Park: A haven to endangered native flora
and fauna, the forested plateau and gorges spanned by the park are home
to over 300 species of native and endemic flowering plants and nine
species of birds only found in Mauritius, including the pink pigeon and
Mauritian kestrel.
4 Hit the beach: Explore some of the island’s top beaches. Among the
best is Flic en Flac in the west, its white sands shaded by casuarina trees.
Mingle with locals and enjoy a beer or meal at the restaurants and bars by
the beach.
5 Water sports: Le Morne in the south is the place to try windsurfing and
kite surfing in the steady south-east trade winds. Dive on the coral reef
surrounding the island or go deep-sea fishing for marlin and other game
fish.
6 Pamplemousses Botanical Garden: The oldest botanical garden in
the Southern Hemisphere, created more than 300 years ago, it is home to
many indigenous plants.
