CENTRE Opened in 2016, the Avalon Golf Estate (www.avalon.mu) features another Peter Matkovich course laid out on undulating terrain on the slopes of the dormant Grand Bassin volcano 400 metres above sea level on the island’s lush, forested central plateau surrounded by tea plantations. On clear days the southern coast of Mauritius and the Indian Ocean can be seen from all 18 holes. After a round, enjoy a post- round pitstop at the clubhouse restaurant, Magic Spoon, which has won plaudits for its cuisine. The course serves up spectacular elevation changes and golfers need to be aware of the deep ravines that edge several fairways. 53
