Sri Lanka-Victoria
ri Lanka - Victoria Golf
S
and Country Resort
While some golf courses are famous for the quality of their
playing conditions, or the challenge of the course, or the
exceptional scenery, Victoria has all these attributes, added to
which are a warm sunny climate, and free draining undulating
fairways. The course is lined with stately Mara trees. The par
73 course, designed by Donald Steel, measures a little less than
7000 yards from the back tees. The signature hole is the 6th,
which is played from an elevated tee, offering stunning views of
the Victoria Reservoir and dam. This 460 yard par 4 demands a
well struck tee shot and a long accurate iron, if the green is to be
reached in regulation.
Thailand-Sanitburi Samui
If there was a classification for ‘wild golf’ then Machirihanish Dunes
would hold the title. This is a young course, designed by David
McLay Kidd in the 2000s, yet the land and nature have dictated
the terms of the course’s development and layout, right down to
the bunkering. Set on a Site of Special Scientific Interest the terrain
buckles sharply and constantly… including on the greens. There’s no
doubt that the wildness and the sheer scale of the dunes make this
a muscular adventure (there are some long green-to-tee walks) but
the location and that natural rhythm make the two Machrihanish
courses irresistible.
