Designing the Classroom Curriculum
There are many different types of assessment tools and strategies that can be used to ascertain the extent
and nature of student learning. We will explore the scope of these in Chapters Seven and Eight.
Synonymous with assessment in schools is the concept of reporting. Reporting is defined as the process
through which individual student learning outcomes are communicated to stakeholders (e.g. students,
parents, education authorities) and is referenced to results obtained from the assessment regime. End of
term report cards, parent interviews and feedback to students are classic examples of classroom reporting.
Importantly, teachers assess and then report the extent of student learning in reference to stipulated syllabus
learning outcomes using defined standards and indicators. These elements are located in the Syllabus.
