PURE DESIGN
Designer Nick Berman chose random northern Idaho quartzite for the floors and smooth drywall
for the walls. The fireplace was given its own sleek canted wall and finished in steel-troweled
concrete.

BURNING BRIGHT
MODERN TWIST
Photographer James Houston designed his home’s interiors to be contemporary and
comfortable, with organic textures and an earth-toned palette. A photograph by Roberto
Dutesco hangs on the fireplace wall, and the wool rug is from Design Within Reach.
COASTAL CRESCENDO
In the open living area, a Hudson Furniture table backs up against a John Boone sofa. Finley
grounded the space with a wool-and-silk rug, from Vera Za’arour Design, in a custom pattern
that mirrors the rolling surf in the distance. John Boone swivel chairs can face the room, the
limestone fireplace or the floor-to-ceiling views.
NATURALLY INCLINED
In the great room of an Aspen house by architect Lea Sisson, designers James Magni and Colin
Dusenbury paired a Vladimir Kagan settee with Jacques Adnet chairs. The fireplace flue and
range hood vent beyond were fabricated in COR-TEN steel by Living Design Studios.
Beside a 14-foot-tall wall of glass doors, this great room includes spaces for living, dining and
quiet conversation. The painting above the contemporary fireplace is an oil on paper by Guy
Anderson, acquired through Greg Kucera Gallery; its concrete backdrop is by Gary Merlino
Construction Co.
UPTOWN OASIS
FINELY TUNED
In this contemporary New York living room, designer John Willey chose a palette of gray, black,
pale blue, ivory, and pops of cranberry. An abstract piece by artist Jorge Pardo hangs above the
mantel.
Citrine accents in a custom Mastour Galleries carpet and a lacquered parchment tabletop by
Etched Design add bright color to the gray palette. In this living room. The original fireplace and
paneled walls were given new life by Empire City Construction.
