Design guide for considering concrete breakout in shear using ACI 318 anchoring-to-concrete provisions October 2025 | Page 30

• PROFIS Engineering calculations would assume the resultant shear load V ua = V ua, x + V ua, y acts on the anchors in row 1, row 2 and row 4 in lieu of V ua, x such that
• Case 1 / Case 2 for row 1, row 2 and row 4
• MAX {( 0.33V ua / ϕV cbg, row 1);( 0.67V ua / ϕV cbg, row 2);( 1.0V ua / ϕV cbgrow 4)} controls for concrete breakout in shear
• This is a conservative assumption. Reference( for example) ACI 318-19 Section 17.7.2.1( d) and the commentary R17.7.2.1:“ For anchors near a corner required to resist a shear force with components normal to each edge, a satisfactory solution is to check the connection independently for each component of the shear force”
Shear Load Parallel to Two Edges
Figure 4.5.
Reference Figure 4.5 [ 30 ]. It illustrates an anchorage into a concrete member having two parallel fixed edges( x + and x- edges). A shear load( V ua) acts in the y- direction parallel to each of the x edges. V ua acts at the centroid of the anchor group( no load eccentricity), but the anchor group is offset from the center of the concrete member. Per ACI 318 shear concrete breakout provisions, when shear load acts parallel to an edge the concrete breakout strength is calculated for a given anchor row / column assuming the shear load acts towards the edge; however, the calculated nominal strength is doubled( 2V cb( g)) since the load actually acts parallel to the edge. Reference, for example, ACI 318-19 Section 17.7.2.1( c).
For the anchorage illustrated above, shear concrete breakout calculations will assume failure surfaces develop from col 1 and from col 2 towards the x- and x + edges. If V ua is assumed to act towards the x- edge, ACI 318 provisions for Case 1 / Case 2 and or Case 3 will be considered with respect to the x- edge distance( 4 in) and the spacing in the x direction between col 1 and col 2( 6 in). If V ua is assumed to act towards the x + edge, ACI 318 provisions for Case 1 / Case 2 and or Case 3 will be considered with respect to the x + edge distance( 8 in) and the spacing in the x direction between col 1 and col 2( 6 in).
