WHY LIGHTING SHOULD NEVER BE AN AFTERTHOUGHT
Lighting has the power to completely transform a space, but the best results rarely begin with choosing light fittings. They begin much earlier, with an understanding of the architecture, the interiors and how a space will be lived in.
Too often, lighting is considered towards the end of a project, when ceiling layouts are fixed, joinery is designed and electrical first fix is approaching. By this stage, many of the opportunities to integrate light beautifully into the architecture have already been lost.
A successful lighting scheme starts by asking a different question: not where should the lights go?, but what do we want to light?
A beautiful stone wall, a piece of artwork, a vaulted ceiling or carefully designed joinery can all become part of the composition. Light can draw attention to texture, create focal points and subtly change our perception of a room. Equally important is deciding what not to light. Shadow and contrast give a space depth; simply filling a ceiling with downlights can leave even the most beautiful interior feeling flat.
Layering is fundamental. Rather than expecting one type of fitting to do everything, combine discreet architectural lighting with decorative pieces, joinery lighting and carefully positioned accent light. Different layers can then be balanced throughout the day, brighter when practical light is needed and softer and more intimate in the evening.
This is also why lighting should be considered alongside the architecture and interior design. Recessed details, joinery, artwork positions, furniture layouts, window treatments and lighting controls all influence the finished result. Early coordination allows these elements to work together, rather than lighting being added to a completed design.
And while the technology behind a sophisticated scheme can be complex, using it shouldn ' t be. Good lighting control allows multiple layers to become simple, intuitive scenes, so the experience is about enjoying the room, not operating the technology.
