WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN SPECIFYING BIFOLD DOORS
Bifold doors have become a defining feature of contemporary residential architecture, creating bright, open spaces that blur the boundary between indoors and out. But specifying the right system involves far more than achieving slim sightlines and impressive aesthetics.
As glazed openings form part of the building envelope, they must also meet demanding performance, safety and compliance requirements. Taking the time to consider these factors at the specification stage can help ensure a system delivers long-term performance as well as visual impact.
PERFORMANCE COMES FIRST
Thermal performance is one of the most important considerations when specifying bifold doors. Choosing a system with high-performing glazing and thermally broken frames can support compliance with Approved Document L while helping to improve occupant comfort and reduce operational energy use.
Overheating should also be considered alongside thermal efficiency. Appropriate glazing, shading strategies and ventilation all contribute to creating comfortable internal environments, with large opening areas allowing bifold doors to provide effective natural ventilation during warmer months. Weather resistance is equally important. Specifiers should assess air permeability, watertightness and wind resistance to ensure a system is appropriate for its location, particularly on exposed or coastal sites.
Acoustic performance may also be a priority, especially in urban environments where reducing external noise can significantly improve occupant wellbeing.
BALANCING SECURITY WITH DESIGN
Security should never be an afterthought. Depending on the project requirements, bifold doors may need to achieve PAS 24 or specific Resistance Class( RC) ratings. Modern systems combine robust security features with discreet hardware, allowing architects to maintain clean aesthetics without compromising protection.
STRUCTURAL AND PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Because bifold doors create large structural openings, early coordination with structural engineers is essential. Panel sizes, opening
