Unlocking the potential of a rural site
Some projects are defined not only by their architecture, but by the collaboration, creativity and problem-solving required to bring them together.
Set in an elevated position with spectacular views across a reservoir, the site was previously occupied by a series of redundant agricultural buildings which had subsequently been adapted for commercial use. While Bloomfields had already obtained planning permission for the conversion of part of the building into a dwelling, the opportunity to create something more ambitious soon became apparent.
Working alongside colleagues at our sister company, Lambert & Foster, who undertook a viability appraisal of the site, Bloomfields began exploring its longer-term potential. By combining property expertise with planning knowledge and architectural design, the team identified an opportunity to replace the ageing buildings with a contemporary family home that would truly respond to its exceptional location.
The project presented a number of challenges throughout the design process. The site’ s planning history, neighbouring properties, rural context and prominent position within the a designated national landscape all required a sensitive and thoughtful approach. Each element of the design was carefully considered to ensure the new dwelling delivered a high-quality modern home while remaining sympathetic to its countryside setting.
Replacing a redundant agricultural building with a distinctive home.
The defining feature of the site is undoubtedly its remarkable outlook across a reservoir. The home has been carefully positioned to maximise these panoramic views, with generous areas of glazing creating a strong connection between the interior spaces and the surrounding landscape. At the same time, the
design carefully considers privacy for neighbouring properties and minimises the building’ s impact on the wider countryside.
Sustainability was central to the design, with renewable technologies and carefully selected materials, such as British larch cladding and a zinc roof helping to create an efficient home that complements its environment.
This project demonstrates the value of a truly integrated approach. From the initial valuation through to planning, design and delivery, the collaboration between Lambert & Foster and Bloomfields unlocked the site’ s full potential, replacing a building with a distinctive home that celebrates a most impressive rural landscape.
