DESIGNING SAFER SPACES FOR WOMEN
After the recent high-profile cases of women being abducted off the streets and murdered , HAD & CO a female-led architecture , planning and property practice have been looking at designing safer spaces for women .
Founders Saira Hussain and Nixie Edwards feel angry , as professionals who have worked in the built environment for over 10 years , that we are still having these same
conversations and feel no real change has been made .
Saira Hussain went on to suggest that the design of inclusive buildings would help , creating spaces where more people will spend their time , the more people the safer the space becomes , maintenance and upkeep of buildings is important , keeping streets clean and fixing faulty street lighting .
" Occasionally I work late in the office and recently there was a faulty streetlight which I usually rely on when locking up on my own , all other business owners on the block are male and have said it doesn ’ t bother them and dismissed my concerns , I think there is still inherently systemic sexism and misogyny in our society , to put it bluntly ."
