Heating, Ventilation & Insulation
Consumers can save hundreds of pounds every year by
switching their heating ON during the summer
Keep hot water ON
During the summer months, central
heating is often the last thing Brits
are thinking about. However, central
heating experts believe that keeping
boilers maintained over the summer
can save consumers hundreds of
pounds, as they will be less likely to
break or be in need of repair during the
winter.
Boiler Plan have found that across
the UK 77% of Brits don’t have boiler
insurance or central heating cover.
A worrying statistic, especially as
the most common date for boiler
breakdowns is 1st December - the last
thing homeowners want in the run up
to Christmas is a large repair bill. To keep boilers and central heating in tip
top condition this summer and beyond,
Boiler Plan has published the following
top tips which can save consumers
hundreds of pounds each year.
It costs on average between £150 and
£400 to get a boiler fixed** when it goes
bust and many companies also charge a
call out fee, so ensuring central heating
is in good working order throughout
the whole year can save money and
ensure everything is in good condition
as the temperature drops. The last thing you would think to do in
the summer is turn your boiler on, but
it’s actually something that could help
keep your boiler in good health all year
round. Boilers can seize up if they’re not
used regularly, so it’s important to turn
your heating on for 10 to 15 minutes
every week, to keep it running smoothly.
Turn heating ON for short
intervals

Depending on how old your boiler is,
turning your boiler completely off isn’t
as economical as many people think. As
well as turning your heating on for 10
to 15 minutes at regular intervals, keep
your hot water on, but on a low setting.
By doing this, not only do you have
hot water for washing the dishes, but
it also helps keep your boiler in good
condition ready for the winter.
Book boiler servicing
To keep your boiler healthy long-term,
you should have your boiler serviced
once a year. Summer is a great time to
get your boiler serviced as most people
arrange a service in winter, when gas
engineers and plumbers are more likely
to be busier. If a fault is found, it’s also
easier to get it fixed in the summer,
rather than discovering a fault in the
winter, when you’re more reliant on
your boiler working.
