from the Editor in Chief Design a year to be remembered Given that the contribution to Malta’s economy by the property and construction industries has reached unprecedented levels, a regrettable, yet logical outcome of this is that even a constant ratio of accidents per site or person will perforce indicate higher figures. Such a fact will be of no consolation to victims of circumstances or unprofessionalism. Nor has it been so to the government, the MDA and other stakeholders to the industry; a wake of enhancements, additions and adjustments to relative regulations were proposed and actioned immediately following the successive collapse of three buildings. It is not simply for reasons of safety that we must build better and better; the consumers of these industries of ours which encompass developments are demanding, and their expectations are high. We must also nurture the footprint and waste less space. Such factors require a strong discipline towards perfection. This edition of Design & Build has attempted to present to its readers a number of champions from various sectors. Our interview with Perit Vincent Cassar will undoubtedly remind us that our professionals are world leaders in their own right and are held in high esteem internationally. We have also outlined the MDA’s most salient points which emerged from the last Annual General Meeting. And a number of key contributors to their sectors have presented to us their core competences as well as their approaches to what they do, highlighting those factors which have led to their successes. Design & Build has also interviewed Ray Scicluna, one of Malta’s most veteran stone masons and builders, so as to gain an understanding of construction from “behind the wall” too. 2019 will definitely be remembered by industry and country alike, both for the prosperity that these industries are relieving to our country but also because of the strides taken in advancing our collective professionalism and ethos. which as the publishers of Design & Build, we are proud to be part of.
