in building better
The name of this publication would seem to emerge from a project deliv-
ery system used in the construction industry worldwide that is commonly
known as Design-Build (DB for short). It is a method which minimises
risk for the project owner as it relies on a single point of responsibility
contract and is used to reduce the delivery schedule by overlapping a
project’s design and construction phases.
“DB with its single point responsibility carries the clearest contractual
remedies for the clients because the DB contractor will be responsible
for all of the work on the project, regardless of the nature of the fault”
(‘Construction Contracts: Law and management’ by John Murdoch and
Will Hughes, 2007). While our scope is not to be a promoter of any form
of single-responsibility philosophy for the development industry in our
Islands, nonetheless we are noting that there is a growing preponderance
of practitioners who are actually embracing this technique here too.
We are looking forward to seeing more such articles in the next issue as
our list of expert contributors continues to grow.
