In the case of foreigners, we are always
lobbying with the Government to fa-
cilitate the acquisition of work per-
mits and thereby further mitigate any
chance of abuse that some may fall
into. The MDA believes that everyone
should be in conformity with the law
and we therefore encourage our mem-
bers and their employees to do likewise.
“Cowboys” have no place in our midst.

Collaborating with other sectors was
a prime mover for the setting up of
the MDA. It helps us understand and
learn from other stakeholders. Such
collaborations also help us understand
which targets the stakeholders wish to
reach, and they enhance our efforts
to make our country more beauti-
ful in that we are collectively greater
than the simple sum of our parts.
Through my experience as the Pres-
ident of the MDA, I can safely say
that our members are always willing
and able to support this kind of at-
titude and to support their imple-
mentation even with their advice de-
rived from their years of experience.
In fact, we have worked hard in the last
two years on a new concept; a foun-
dation which we are calling “Property
Malta”. The idea for this is to have a ve-
hicle to be able to promote our coun-
try internationally around the world
as a destination to come and retire
here, to come and work here, where
one can come and relax on holiday.
This is being implemented through
an agreement with the Government
through which it has as equal a say
in the foundation as the MDA does.

Conclusion
It is obvious to everyone that the con-
struction industry is the major pillar
of the Maltese economy. When the
construction industry does well the
whole nation does too, as is clearly the
situation at the moment. To back this
up, and to delve deeply into these fac-
tors, we have proposed that a study be
undertaken on the various aspects of
the industry – examining aspects such
as how many are gainfully occupied in
it, what sort of property demands ex-
ist or are expected, and so forth.
The findings should result in an in-
teresting study since it has never yet
been undertaken in these islands
before and will probably give us an
insight into what really drives this
property market forward. It is being
done under the MDA’s umbrella,
not via Governmental support but
through our own efforts and the
support of the BOV and later of APS

were able to raise the necessary funds
to implement it. The target is to
have the first results available by next
June.
This little country of ours has a great
potential in all spheres. There is
demand everywhere. The country is
versatile such that within a few min-
utes one can move from an enter-
tainment area to the countryside,
from the shopping centre to your
home…. and the seaside is never
more than a 30 minute drive away
in any direction. Ours is a beautiful
country and we have to care for its
environmental character, especially
that of certain specific areas.
There should be more discipline and
due diligence for those who are liv-
ing here, so that we do not through
the arrival of foreigners lose the
reputation our country has always
rightfully had of being a safe haven.
Progress besets new projects and new
challenges but the melting pot that
all this produces should be looked at
as positively as possible.
