Design
in building sustainably
We are undoubtedly all familiar with the saying “You never get a second chance
to make a first impression”, or its Maltese counterpart “L-ewwel tiekol l-ghajn”.
And since a “first impression” is said to only consist of a seven second window
upon first meeting someone, one must ponder on those initial impressions which
are passed onto potential customers once they are introduced to a product.
But foundation and infrastructure must be impervious to damage and subject
to smooth operational processes, and we ought to appreciate the utter impor-
tance of having cores which are impeccably built and which fully contribute to
the sustainability of our building. This is indeed crucial to the industry’s funda-
mental need of paying tribute to our heritage, our culture, our mobility needs,
our small island footprint, our developing melting pot and so much more.
This edition of Design & Build has explored some of these important elements…
the vision of a new development in Mellieha that looks at its neighbouring am-
biance as much as at its customers’ wants and needs….. the vision of a Minister
whose hands-on approach is solidly contributing towards the amortisation of
our transport and infrastructural issues as we continue to commute under stress
and frustration…..as well as the vision of various other entrepreneurs and public
authorities who believe in putting their all into their ideas.
The issue has also examined how a vision of bridging heritage with modern re-
quirements has rewarded a Maltese architect with international recognition, as
well as with that of his peers by receiving two Malta Architect Awards last year.
Thank you for your read.
