46 can go extravagant and use the space like a garden. Installing AstroTurf in one area and a pergola in the other divides the space up, large pots or planters can be planted with larger and smaller plants to create barriers between the different areas. If there is enough drainage on the balcony and there is a tap, one can even go as far as installing an outside shower for the hot summer months. The options for designing and decorating a balcony are endless. If you can dream it, it can be done. All it takes is some careful planning and some ingenious ideas to set it in motion. I suggest you consult a designer before embarking on a major design, just to make sure the slab construction will hold up. For inspiration, do a bit of searching on the internet, or just look around you when you drive. You will be surprised at the great ideas you can get by observing your surroundings, and then translate these to your own space and budget. desIgn Namibia October - December 2013
