HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED HOW
COLOR TRENDS ARE PREDICTED?
Color trends are created by global and local
events, including politics, the environment,
even housing affordability. The Color
Marketing Group®, a not-for-profit, international
association of color design professionals from
many industries all over the world, observe
what is happening in their regions and select
key stories to predict common themes and
needs that will occur. All of the insights and
research are then narrowed into three key
stories. This year’s key stories are as follows:
SELF-TRUTH The lines are blurred between
an artificial world and humanity. We want
to know more about where we come from,
our ancestry and the indigenous people and
stories around us. This is predicted to show
up in 2020 in reddish brown tones indicative
of pottery and abodes with yellow tones and
warm creams.
EMPATHY Our connectivity to our devices
has given us a voice but not on a level filled
with meaning or human connection. The
need for human connection will make us want
to connect on a deeper level. This leads to
more compassion and empathy for humanity
in general – embracing our imperfections
together. This need will manifest in Navy blues
and warm pink hues.
DO TANK We are done standing in the
shadows hoping something will change. It
is time to act and people are. People are
looking to what they can do to create change.
Millennials are pressuring politicians to live the
talk and demanding that companies walk the
talk. This will bring about colors indicative of
nature. 2020 will see a strong representation
of greens, golds and blues with a green
undertone complemented by shades of black.
Colors are warming up, adopting the influence
of gold. The whites will take on a creamy
warmth, and neutrals will continue to play a
strong supporting role but in warmer tones.
Pastels will be considered part of a neutral
palette, including soft dusty pinks and warmer
blues with a green undertone. Over all, earthy
tones are on their way back, indicative of
stories and ancient traditions. - Thoma Doehring, Tri-
