The Stress Test was first introduced by the Canadian federal government in 2017 . The stress test requires lenders to ensure that you qualify for your mortgage at a higher-thanmarket interest rate . This is required both for new purchases as well as for mortgage renewals and refinances . The main reason for this legislation is to ensure that you will continue to be able to afford your mortgage in the event that interest rates rise . In the current market , the Stress Test rate is the higher of 4.79 % or 2 % on top of the Lender ’ s contract mortgage rate .
According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation ( CMHC ), your monthly housing costs should not exceed 32 % of your gross household income . The Stress Test will only impact your ability to secure a mortgage if you are taking on a mortgage that comes too close to maximizing your mortgage limit . You may need to secure a larger down payment to lower the mortgage amount or select a new home with a lower purchase price .
