By the river
The Adige, Castelvecchio, the Arsenale and greenery
everywhere. In Verona, there is a unique space in the
world whose genius loci crosses the interiors of an
elegant residence in the historic centre, strengthening
the bond with history and the masters of the past.
In the Scaliger city, ancient Roman origins are deeply
linked to medieval times as well as the more recent past
merges with the present, in a precious and unique mix.
Everything is art and history; everything is intimately
pervaded by the “zeitgeist”. And if, as Servius claimed
in the 4th century BC, nullus locus est sine Genio or
“there is no place without spirit”, it is clear how much
the renovation of the abode displayed in these pages
is mainly and deliberately connected to one’s genius
loci that means to the history and the surrounding
environment.
The flat faces the Adige — on the opposite bank to the
north tower of Castelvecchio, in a privileged position
compared to the nearby 19th-century Austrian Arsenale
barracks — and it converses with outdoor spaces,
magnifying not just what surrounds the abode but also
what it represents. The whole building was designed
by Arrigo Rudi, a renowned Veronese architect and a
disciple of Carlo Scarpa, the great master who in turn
enhanced the museum spaces in Castelvecchio during
the ‘80s and the’90s.
The renovation was designed and followed by the
architect Elleno Squassabia together with Gruppo
Squassabia’s staff, taking into account the history,
the place and the landscape of the property, Works
involved the whole house, redesigning spaces and hiding
all electrical and hydraulic systems from view. The
result has been widely appreciated by the customers,
especially since they — due to the historical and artistic
value of the property — had purchased this abode to turn
it into the house of their life, according to their needs
and their “spirit of life”.
Thus was born “Arsenale House”, a distinguished and
elegant residence overlooking the river and the city. The
previous dividing walls were demolished, the renovation
opened spaces to make room for the suggestive outdoor
through the particular windows by Rudi.
The large and bright attic develops around the staircase
that — placed in the heart and connected to a novel
attic — has been designed with volumes and materials
— wood and glass — which reflect Scarpa’s typical
language. Therefore, Biancone — a typical local marble
— has been used for some elements and in the blocks
of Castelvecchio and Arsenale. Volumes, furnishings,
and refined wainscoting interact with each other in a
stable visual continuity between inside and outside, a
series of ups and downs between solids and voids which
represent the undisputed beauty and uniqueness of this
abode.
