Celebrating the successes of 2015-2016

By Jamie Wilson , Ed . D . Superintendent of Schools
To close this school year we celebrated our seniors , our fifth- and eighth-graders that are transitioning to their next educational milestone and our prekindergarten students who are eager to make that big jump to elementary school . When I see and experience these celebrations , I always feel great amount a pride in the work that our students and staff are doing in our classrooms .
Our students continue to achieve and perform well - yet they also know our teachers and staff , play a role in helping them get there . In this issue , read about our Teachers of the Year who will represent us at the regional competition ; coincidentally they both work at Ryan - Elementary and High - and they both are extremely passionate about two subjects that couldn ’ t be more different , English and P . E .
Join us in celebrating a third teacher of the year , Evers Park Elementary ’ s Carrie Martin who won herself and the school $ 5,000 each from Barnes & Noble for the ultimate thank you note written by Ryan High grad Ti Anna Bridges-Reed . And , we recognize the work of educators such as Audra Williams , a counselor at Myers Middle School who was honored by Communities in Schools of North Texas , for service outside of the classroom .
The Class of 2016 has made us proud with their numerous state titles , national accolades and local awards and recognitions . They will continue to do so by attending prestigious schools , giving back to their community and eventually becoming great citizens of this city , state or nation .
Learn about our cover graduate , Valedictorian Adinawa Adjagbodjou , who will trade walking the halls of Denton High for Harvard University in the fall . Check out how Guyer High ’ s Ethan Toy jumped his way to the school ’ s first state track and field championship . Or , make note of Ryan ’ s Stephen Plunkett , a 1999 graduate , who is pursuing acting on the stage and screen - both large and small - and still finds ways to sneak back home .
This summer we will continue to work through the adoption of our budget , anticipate the decisions that impact public education coming from the Texas Legislature and prepare to open two new campuses . It ’ s an exciting time to be a part of Denton ISD , and I ’ m proud to work for the success of our community ’ s young people .
Remember , the future is not something you enter , it is something we create .
