When Officer Cose picked his seat in the Wilson Elementary Cafeteria, the table quickly filled with excited kids. District Launches “A Hero’s Helping” Story and Photos by Julie Zwahr Open free lunch invitation for all vets, emergency personnel on any day First responders might need to practice opening string cheese or up their awareness of the latest fad in on-line gaming, so they can ‘blend in’ at their local school’s cafeteria table. Grabbing lunch at their neighborhood school just got a lot more entertaining and fun all because of a new idea to strengthen relationships with students. “A Hero’s Helping” provides opportunities for students and staff to build positive relationships as well as provide an extra sense of security by inviting law enforcement, firefighters, veterans 8 and service personnel to lunch in one of the district’s 41 campus cafeterias on any day, for free. “We enjoy a strong relationship with local law enforcement through our school resource officers, we want to expand that to other officers, fire fighters, paramedics and even veterans who might not be as familiar with our students,” said Jamie Wilson, superintendent of schools. “Providing them lunch is the least we can do.” Personnel who are on-duty and stop by for lunch are encouraged to park in the front drive and maintain a very visible presence while on campus.
