Denton ISD Our Impact In Your Community Magazine Fall 2017 | Page 6

Welcome & Thank You !

It ’ s the start of a new year filled with opportunities for each one of our more than 29,000 students on 41 campuses . The start of school is a great time for each of us to improve ourselves and build upon the optimism of a fresh start .
By Dr . Jamie Wilson Superintendent of Schools
Our teachers and staff , are some of the nicest , hardest working people I know and they ’ re committed to making sure each of our students is a step closer to graduation , or ready to advance , by the time the year comes to an end .
Ultimately , educating our students is why we are all here and why we do what we do . We understand that we are tasked with educating students across 17 different communities and pride ourselves on remaining true to Denton ISD ’ s “ small-town ” feel despite unprecedented growth over the past decade . Our large geographic footprint includes families from different ethnic , social and economic backgrounds – all of whom have an equal stake in their children ’ s education .
Our campuses are deep with folks who serve others daily – not just teachers and students but volunteers and parents . By leading each day and taking part in your child ’ s education , you are setting the example of what service to our community is all about .
This edition features the opening of Dr . Rudy and Rosemary Rodriguez Middle School . The education “ power couple ,” are a prime example of serving others and bettering the community . Both are longtime advocates for public education and helping students , so on behalf of our Board of Trustees , I ’ m proud to see our district ’ s eighth middle school bare their name . It opened in August with 647 students in the Town of Oak Point and we anticipate it being a hub of activity in our community moving forward .
Our Trustees have done an outstanding job of guiding our district through this growth , opening nine schools in the past nine years and staffing them appropriately while staying well within financial means . Their goal is to continue to do this , which is why I want to personally thank our citizens who participated in the Tax Ratification Election ( TRE ).
Its approval ensures that we are maximizing our local tax revenue while keeping the ad valorem tax rate at $ 1.54 , as it has been for the past four years , and captures an additional $ 7.9 million to spend locally in support of our students and staff .
As administrators , teachers and staff , we have the privilege of impacting our community through our students , our future leaders , and I thank you for giving us that opportunity each day .
Sincerely ,
